It makes us too cautious, too tolerant of abuse. People won't admit that they accept authoritarianism because they benefit from it at least a little.

We are poorer now and unless we do something about it we will get even poorer. When the minuses overtake the plusses, people will finally act.

It takes a lot of energy to overcome inertia and move a large mass. Masses of people will start to act when someone or something creates that energy.

I think ideology is just the means we use to hide our fears, greed, indolence.Susan of Texashttps://www.blogger.com/profile/00076915322771385454noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-2222630007427380394.post-65592594785506724592014-09-06T13:11:51.628-05:002014-09-06T13:11:51.628-05:00Scratch a Liberal and you'll find a Libertaria...Scratch a Liberal and you'll find a Libertarian. Same love of Private Property, obliviousness towards iniquity(especially those established in the past that continue unabated--treatment of Native Americans and People of Color in the United States). Libertarianism is the dark, and calculating, heart behind every Liberal mask(rhetoric of progress, free markets, rule of law etc) that defends "meritocracy"(inherited wealth, sustained inequality, resource wars abroad for "lower fuel prices"[not really, just greater Oil Cartel profiteering--JOBS!]because a certain nation is exceptional). Read Mao's "Combat Liberalism". Adam Smith too--the Invisible Hand is a God who sets up a wealthy elect who exploits lesser folks because it's "natural" and "proper" because they were born better.

Classical Liberalism was ushered into the world via Colonialism, Slavery, and Genocide. It continues to this day. Libertarianism champions this unabashedly, often with bigotry and cold calculation("The Iraq War will end up making US money, never mind the pile of corpses!"). Liberals use terms like "free markets, democracy, and progress" for the same kind of bigoted and mass murdering paternalism. Despite the differences in rhetoric, both support the same globalized rapine for their very own, and special, "security interests".

Liberals and Libertarians espouse amorality under the guise of "democracy, progress, and free markets" to promote globalized looting. They're often very emotional about it--especially when some poor folks-- label them terrorists, insurgents-- hamper ability to sustain the growth of their "investment"(wealth).

McCardle, clumsily, exposes the fraud of Liberalism by championing Libertarian values. She accomplishes this via the most exemplary ignorance of all, arrogance.

Anatole Davidhttps://www.blogger.com/profile/09475202797984385346noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-2222630007427380394.post-6520657810211746822014-09-05T11:20:06.470-05:002014-09-05T11:20:06.470-05:00Yes, because who better to bump uglies with than a...Yes, because who better to bump uglies with than a dude who will probably lecture you on how the female orgasm is evolutionarily superfluous or some shit. Skinny Little Boy fro...Thanks for the compliments.

Skinny Little Boy from Cleveland, Ohio--thanks for that very interesting information.

I have seen McArdle use condescension in one form or another as well. She called her readers "my little chicadees," she used a "sit down little children and listen to Auntie Jane Galt teach you" tone countless times, and as you have seen she uses condescension to attack her perceived enemies.

She has quoted and described her mother a few times and this tactic might have been learned at an early age and honed to a fine edge at her prep school. She's described the piranha-like behavior of the girls there and in junior high, where words were weapons and she and her friends liked nothing better than a game of what's wrong with everyone else. (Her words.)

But as you note most people stop using that tactic because it is so very annoying, and she does it less often, although it still seems to be deeply ingrained. ("Hello, Internet, it’s Megan McArdle again, with a friendly message about morality")

We know that many orgs, particularly those right of center pay people to post--Krugman periodically points this out. The usual wingnut approach is to try changing the subject, usually with a talking point or an ad hominem attack. Argle-bargle was a little different from that but transparently not interested in real debate.

That is VERY interesting. McArdle used to write for Tech Central, the scandal-plagued website. She downplayed it. http://turbula.net/2003-winter/tech-tech.php

I will do some research and write a post about that as soon as I have time.

Heh, McArdle wrote a less-than-convincing post about why libertarians are better mates.
Susan of Texashttps://www.blogger.com/profile/00076915322771385454noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-2222630007427380394.post-88123606049494616692014-09-05T09:40:57.083-05:002014-09-05T09:40:57.083-05:00I remember interacting with Argle-Bargle on the ol...I remember interacting with Argle-Bargle on the old TableTalk BB at Salon.com.

Her MO was to engage you with some dimunative of your handle (the only person I ever knew to do that) and then proceed to indicated that she knew your opinion of something (not previously expressed) or the rationale for your opinions (also not previously expressed). She was usually wrong and something resembling rational debate was of no use. It was always peppered by I used to be a liberal, I'm still a democrat, I'm a libertarian not a conservative.

The authoritarianism and lack of empathy were definitely there as they are in self-involved blog posts. I never got the using a diminutive--that was something that belonged to a very different generation--my mother's clueless older sister did this as did old maid substitute teachers I had as child, but no one much younger. It does set up a hierarchy--I'm the mommy/auntie. grandmother, teacher and you're the little boy/girl, but in such an irritating way that it clearly died out for good reason. The assumption, etc. all seemed to be based on a script of what left-of-center people were "supposed to" be like. We know that many orgs, particularly those right of center pay people to post--Krugman periodically points this out. The usual wingnut approach is to try changing the subject, usually with a talking point or an ad hominem attack. Argle-bargle was a little different from that but transparently not interested in real debate.

A friend of mine has dataed a couple liberatarians, including one who was/is a 2nd/3rd string libertarian blogger. her impression of the libertarians she's met through these guys is that there are a lot of Aspargers in these social networks, perhaps a good marker for the lack of empathy. Needless to say, liberatarian is now a rule out for making dates for her.Skinny Little Boy from Cleveland, Ohiohttps://www.blogger.com/profile/04360441752575669061noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-2222630007427380394.post-27561152069501418062014-09-04T20:54:18.157-05:002014-09-04T20:54:18.157-05:00"Every time McArdle said that her heart broke..."Every time McArdle said that her heart broke at a child's shooting, she lied.
