And I must be missing something because I'm not sure I know what "the penny will drop" means (all the smart snarkists do). I assume it's another snarkilicious term of ridicule directed at Her Elfness, which is always to the good.
"Dropping the penny" is sort of like seeing the light, in a non-religious sense. It's having an "oh, no duh!" moment. Given Ms. McArdle's rather high opinion of herself, I wouldn't hold your breath waiting for it to happen any time soon.
