Feudalism

Via Avedon Carol, we see that Obama is not moving away from eliminating the social net. It's just another step in the process. The elites needed to steal everything they could get their hands on while forcing or maneuvering people into debt so they couldn't fight back. When the people could take out no more debt they moved on to the next step, taking money currently spent on taxes. First the social net, because it's easy to pass that off as a moral thing to do when you control morality through religion. [Caution, wingnut site.] Then tax money spent on anything that does not personally benefit the elites. Soon the people will work for a pittance to support the elite; they'll have no choice.

The people will be frustrated, but the elite didn't finance talk radio and think tanks for thirty years for nothing. The people will turn on each other first, and by the time they notice that elites are the enemy, more time will have passed and more monies stolen. Finally, when the American people have nothing left to lose, they will wrestle power back from the elite.

I won't hold my breath.

ADDED: From, via:

Like feudal lords claiming the economic surplus for themselves while
administering austerity for the population at large, the wealthiest 1 per cent
of the population has raised their appropriation of the nationwide returns to
wealth – dividends, interest, rent and capital gains – from 37 per cent of the
total ten years ago to 57 per cent five years ago and it seems nearly 70 per
cent today. This is the highest proportion since records have been kept.

  1. Seems a little too conspiratorial to me, like taking seriously the idea that X happening was good for McCain. In this case the blinkered Politico manufactures a framing that the dismantlers of Social Security would enjoy seeing in print. What else is new?

Not that people shouldn't be vigilant...

  2. Look at Karl Rove. Was he conducting an international conspiracy for global domination, taking time out only to pet his Persian lap cat? Or was he simply using every opportunity to do his job; take advantage of his position to gain wealth and power? In either case the result would be the same, although there would be far fewer cool spy gadgets in the realistic version.
