Less Spiritual Megan

Shorter Megan McArdle: I have completely bought into the corporation-based point of view, to the point that I see a threat to my credit as worse than a threat to my life. I cannot even imagine a world based on human dignity, and instead crouch fearfully in a world based on how much money people can make off of me.

  1. It's just so important to Megan "to be considered middle class in this society." Here's an idea - try not giving a stinking rat's ass what class other people consider you. Try not assessing a human being's worth based on how much they own. Character. Morals. Treating other people with kindness and respect. Some of us think these things are more important than whether or not we'll be able to get a loan for a trendy car.

  2. Ever notice how whenever something gets fucked up in Megan's life it's always someone else's fault? So this time it's a "misfiled" state tax return and "apparently" a wrong address. It was, Megan says, a "series of bizarre events." How about the bizarre event was Megan not filing state income tax returns because she blew all her freelance earnings buying stupid Christmas presents?

The internets are great because our friends over at the New York's Department of State, State Tax Warrant Notice System, allows you to search old tax liens by taxpayor name. Enter "McArdle" and what do you get? Why how 'bout one MEGAN J MCARDLE, residing at 55 W 95TH ST 1
NEW YORK, NY 10025-8519. The State slapped a $3,386.94 lien on ol' Megan on June 13, 2006. It shows it was satisfied, though, on October 5, 2006.

I think the lien reflected several years of missed filings, because you need an taxable income north of $70,000 to get hit for $3,300 in state income taxes (I'm guessing). I doubt Megan was making that kind of dough back then, but who knows (or cares).

  3. Blake, I don't think that is her, I seem to remember she said her middle name was Elizabeth. She's too vague to tell what really happen--did they "misfile" her tax return or did she neglect to fill out the correct paperwork? She's done that before, repeatedly.

Either way, it's very entertaining to watch McArdle begin to realize that all of us make mistakes and are vulnerable to those who have power over us.

Clever p--but how do you know someone's worth if you don't base your assessment on how much they make??? How can they further your career if they aren't important?
