Accidental Vacation--Not Dead Yet

I did not mean to be gone so long; I had a lot of work to catch up on but, oddly, once I was caught up I became accustomed to getting work done and did not want to stop to blog. But all work and no play makes a frustrated blogger so I will try to do both.

I hear there were random shootings and Syrian violence, spending is slowing, and the boys are once again deciding if the girls belong in their club or not. So nothing has changed!

  1. Welcome back!

I don't think that link was so much about girls as about corporations hiring car models to get their hands in geek pockets. (Or maybe the author trying to placate some geek girlfriend by pretending the hot fakes didn't really please him.)

I took a couple girls to a convention. Dropped them off, left 'em for 8 hours, and the only worry was whether they'd bother to eat. (They didn't) At least half the kids there were female.

  2. Thanks!

Yes, the link was just an example of the wider debate regarding girls and geekdom. It seems strange to see people debate this--lots of girls loved Star Wars. It seems like yet another stupid "What do women want/Where do women belong?" discussion.

  4. Nice to have you back, Susan.

But it isn't. There is absolutely no question that girls belong in the geek club. In fact, a large portion of the article is dedicated to the idea that yes, girls belong in the club and the whole point of the article is that the membership in the club is only predicated upon actually caring about the stuff the club cares about.

  6. I got a definite patronizing vibe off that column. He's welcoming women to fandom/geekdom? While defining who may and who may not be a member? If he's the tall one on the right in the picture (and even if he's not), odds are pretty good I've been a geek/in fandom longer than he's been alive. Punk.

Well, there seem to be people around who find the very idea of actual women being members of the club appalling (as the reference to "Fat, Ugly Or Slutty" is undoubtedly intended to show). And as long as these pricks are around, someone needs to - at least from time to time - say out loud that girls are indeed welcome, even if it might come off as patronizing.

    Kids these days, eh?
