Shorter Megan McArdle: My house will hold its value. But DC schools are poor.
Private school is the answer! Sure, you won't be able to spend as much money on kitchen appliances but the alternative is working hard to improve your local school, and that would just encourage the moochers and looters.

Once the little bundle of joy is born, she will have to move out to the affluent suburbs. This will probably be a little embarrassing for an upper class wannabe because she won't be able to afford the tuition to St. Alban's and will have to rely on public school education.
I don't understand why she thinks she'll never be priced out of DC.
As long as she doesn't move (and can keep paying the mortgage) she is probably safe. But the suburbs she would want to move to around DC for the schools (Arlington or Bethesda) are as expensive and going up just as fast as downtown so they better find another revenue stream to pay for that private school.
I recommend home schooling. ArgleBargle has a lot of time on her hands.
Oh god, imagine what sort of creature would be created if Megan were to homeschool it.
Remember that spoof about the Objectivist toddler in the playground?
Spoof no more!
