Kathryn Jean Lopez Jumps the Shark

In toto:

re: Civics [Kathryn Jean Lopez]
A totally crazy Saturday-morning thought: Wouldn't George W.
Bush make an awesome high-school government teacher? Wouldn't it be something if
his post-presidential life would up being that kind of post-service service?
How's that for a model? Who needs Harvard visiting chairs and high-end lectures?
How about Crawford High? (Or wherever?) Reach out and touch the young before
they are jaded, or break them of the cynicism pop culture and possibly their
parents have passed down to them. Whatever you think of President Bush, he's a
likable guy in love with his country with some history and experience to share.
Like I said, crazy. Saturday. Have a good one.

Sorry, Lopez, he'll be too busy drinking himself to death to get up at 6 am and teach school.

I was originally going to protest this post, for the following thread of reasoning. For someone to have "jumped the shark", they sort of need to be "unjumped" in the first place, right? I mean, at one point in his career, people seemed to think that Tom Cruise was sort of normal and a rather above average actor. (O.K., debatable point, but there are "some people" who thought that. Take my word on it.) K-Lo, in my estimation, was NEVER ON THE RIGHT SIDE OF THE SHARK TO BEGIN WITH. A total loon from the beginning. I am sure you see my point.

However, after reading the provided quote, I would tend to agree with you. Isn't there something that comes AFTER the shark? A whale shark, maybe? The giant squid? But Lord, that is a stupid thought. George Bush as a teacher? And a "government teacher" at that. I could play games with this for a while, about who, throughout history, would be least qualified to teach young, impressionable minds, like, oh, the Unabomber teaching a course in good manners in polite society. Jesse Helms (bye, Jess!) teaching a course about race relations in America.

Yeah, I want a pathalogical liar with a father complex teaching my kid anything. Not.

Excellent point about K-Lo. To jump the shark you have to be popular or interesting at some point.

Hmm, what do you call it when someone proves beyond a shadow of a doubt that they are one of the most stupid, most deluded people on the planet?

Most stupid and deluded? I thought that was Jonah Goldberg.

High school civics must have really changed. Back in the day, we read the Declaration and Constitution and Federalist Papers and shit like that. Now it's "My Pet Goat?"

Jonah's a perfect example, but not even he has that certain Lopez touch--a deliberate obtuseness that border on self-lobotomy.

"My Pet Goat," and "How To Torture My Pet Goat."

I think she should dress up George like a surfer and George could surf all day with Barbie. Or she could dress George up like a camper and he could camp all day with Barbie.

In my imagination Kathryn Jean doesn't have any Barbies because the doll's just a blond slut who spent the night with Ken in the Barbie Dream House.

Instead, she'll dress up George to look like her favorite doll.
