Going Galt

Rod Dreher has left the Dallas Morning News to join the John Templeton Foundation, a rather odd group that seem to be trying to apply scientific inquiry to religion. I thought faith precluded a search for proof. Where's the virtue in belief if you try to find evidence? No doubt we'll soon find Dreher explaining that because some religious paintings are beautiful and everyone like beautiful things, endorphins prove God exists.

Yeah, but Jesus gave "Doubting Thomas" proof, showing his (JC's) wounds and all that. Didn't send him Hell or anything.

BTW: Does Jesus ever even mention "Hell"? Its been a looong while since I attended (the hated) Sunday School. I tried hard not to learn anything there -I mean SCHOOL on SUNDAY!

Kathy,

he does, e.g.:
Matthew 5:22 (KJV) - "But I say unto you, That whosoever is angry with his brother without a cause shall be in danger of the judgment: and whosoever shall say to his brother, Raca, shall be in danger of the council: but whosoever shall say, Thou fool, shall be in danger of hell fire."
Matthew 5:29 (KJV) - "And if thy right eye offend thee, pluck it out, and cast it from thee: for it is profitable for thee that one of thy members should perish, and not that thy whole body should be cast into hell."
But of course, this hell He's talking about is Gehenna, i.e. Valley of Hinnom, an actual place in/near Jerusalem, so chances are His understanding of hell was much different from ours. I've seen tongue-in-cheek translations where the Greek γεεννα was translated as "New Jersey" :)
