Oh, Megan!

In this week's episode of Oh, Megan!, Megan doesn't do her homework and must face the music. Co-starring Matthew Yglesias as the Professor.

Matthew Yglesias: It would be a great idea for the government to cut out the middle man and make more direct student loans.

Megan McArdle: The government is not a bank. Starting a bank is very expensive, so banks should make student loans, not the government.

Commenter: The government already makes student loans.

Megan McArdle: "Yes, I'm aware the government makes direct loans. I'm sure it's lovely. I just don't think it will be particularly cheap to expand."

THE END

Wrong, elitist and snide. A trifecta!

That government can't do anything right! It won't conform to a single idea I have!

The only reason I got to go to college was because of a government loan. My father made too much money for me to qualify, but claimed me as a dependent as long as he could get away with it while adamantly refusing to help me pay for my education. Banks wouldn't have given me a loan based 1) on my father's income 2) my lack of established credit. But hey, screw me. Megan got to go to college and probably had mommy and daddy pay for it to boot.

And her assertion that you can just get a job to help pay tuition is absurd. I worked full time and could barely make my rent and living expenses, let alone tuition. It was a small town where there weren't really a lot of opportunities for work that paid more than minimum wage; I was lucky to get a job of any kind in the first place. But hey, HER parents did it, so EVERYONE can do it.

Megan never really considers the larger picture outside of her own extrememly limited experiences, does she? What a self-absorbed idiot.

Wear a uniform,
All on a government loan.

This post of hers puzzles me a lot. Either she doesn't know about student loans from the government or she thinks she can say absolutely anything without repercussion. Which might be true.

It's not that puzzling (you're giving her too much credit, so to speak). Once again, it's her sheer and/or willful ignorance.

The government is not a bank.

Leaving aside the entire Federal Reserve system for the moment, even more to the point: you don't have to be a fvcking bank to make a loan! Credit card companies, payday loan companies, pawn shops, car dealerships, department stores, all loan money every day. Ever heard of the phrase "loan shark?" Anybody can make a loan without being a bank...fer chrissakes, how dense can you get?

Anything to further her petulant little Jane-Galt-as-princess schtick, I guess.
