Political Abortions

Megan McArdle finds something in the health care debate to agree with.
I think that not paying for abortions is morally and politically correct; you cannot use public money to subsidize an activity that half the public thinks is something akin to murder. Even if Democrats win this battle, the minute the Republicans get control, they'll just undo it. If you think crowding out is real, then you need to accept the fact that national health care may reduce access to this particular procedure. Maybe Republicans could learn to love this plan after all . . .
Do you know I think is akin to murder? Murder. Yet I am forced to pay for our murder of innocent Iraqi women and children and unborn babies. Somehow the right never seems to think of that while weeping over all the dead babies.

Is she the stupidest person alive? What about the death penalty? I think that's akin to murder, and last time I checked, it wasn't an endeavor privately funded by Lethal Injection Inc. That argument is as dumb as saying every person in the country should get to pick and choose exactly where their tax dollars land.

How will national health care reduce access to abortion? Why do these people act like private health care is going to go away if there's a public health program? Nothing will change. Women will go about obtaining the procedure the same way they have in the past.

Every Catholic is supposed to be against the death penalty, yet they pay taxes anyway.

If the Democrats could pass single payer they could probably also pass funding for women's health care. I doubt that either will happen, but that's just a guess.

And, of course, people pay premiums to companies that pay for abortions right now. As do taxes, in some instances.

Q. Does insurance cover the cost of an abortion?
A. Almost two-thirds of insurance companies cover elective abortion to some degree. Contact your insurance company to find out if you are covered.

Q. Does military insurance cover the cost of an abortion?
A. At this time, military health plans cover abortion only in cases of life endangerment.

Q. Does Medicaid or other state-assisted health insurance cover the cost of an abortion?
A. Medicaid is only required to cover abortion in cases of rape, incest, or life endangerment. However, some states do cover abortion as part of their Medicaid policies.

If anyone thought it was akin to murder they'd be trying to pass laws to put women in jail for it.

Yeah, but then the right's wives and daughters might get thrown in the clink, and we can't have that.

So she forget to pretend to be pro-choice in this piece? And libertarian? The government should restrict existing coverage?

Haha.

A bullshitter travels light and swift, for she carries no facts, and has no need of them. Neither shame, nor virtue, nor never being right shall sway these scoundrels from preaching their anointed Rand.
